Wysłany: 02-01-2012, 21:52   MOH RADIO LIVE TOP 100 2011 - RESULTS AND ANALYSIS #1

It’s already two days ago, but the MOH Radio Live-crew is still pumped up with adrenaline because of the incredibly successful MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011. With listeners from more than fifty different countries, this was definitely the most internationally appreciated show in its history. Our thanks and respect go out to all of you: thousands of hardcore freaks tuned in during the fourteen hour marathon on Hardcore Radio. And in the end, the bookmakers’ favorite for the title lived up to the expectations: Angerfist’s track “Incoming” was elected the most popular track of 2011. It’s time for MOH Radio Live-host DJ Mercenary’s annual analysis of the chart and background information about the results and voting process.

First of all: it has been an incredible year for the hardcore scene in many ways: more and more souls have been taken over by the hardcore virus all over the world, the parties are getting bigger on all continents and the number of productions in 2011 was insane: our MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011-database contained more than 1700 tracks, which is almost twice as much as in 2010. And the best thing is, that these tracks were produced all over the world: besides traditional hardcore countries such as The Netherlands and Italy, an increasing number of tracks are being produced in nations like France, Spain, Germany, the U.K., U.S.A. and even Japan, Australia and the Republic of Korea. This is a huge achievement which enriches the hardcore scene in a huge way: more and more countries are starting to bring their own producers and DJ’s to the game, which can’t be celebrated enough. But it’s quite clear that the emphasis still remains on Dutch and Italian hardcore, as proven by the results of the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011.

ANGERFIST’S DOMINATION

Now, it’s time for some juicy details and to name some of the events that had a huge impact on the results of the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011. Last year, I stated that 2010 had been the year of the Masters of Hardcore imprint. Let me specify it for you in 2011: for those who didn’t know, Angerfist rules the hardcore scene at the moment. There is no artist who’s at his level regarding popularity, which was already proven by the fact thousands of performances worldwide and the fact that he was the first hardcore artist ever to hit the DJ Mag Top 100 at a stunning 39th position. But how huge is he compared to other hardcore artists? Just look it up for yourself: take the ten most popular hardcore artists you can imagine and you will find out that the #2 hardcore artist came in at #160: Korsakoff with Outblast being the third hardcore artist at #199. Ok, Angerfist had been campaigning quite intensively for the DJ Mag Top 100, but he made it to the DJ Mag Top 100 because of his HUGE fanbase. And those fans all have one thing in common: the love for his music. This led to the insane amount of 34 Angerfist-related tracks ( including the “How Soon We Forget” remix, Kid Morbid and The Supreme Team-projects) in the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011. Now that’s what I would like to call domination.

ALBUMS FOR THE WIN

Some said that Angerfist’s “Retaliate” album had been represented that well because of the releasedate ( released at the same date as the poll opened). I think they’re false. I sincerely believe that if Angerfist would have dropped the album in January for instance, it would still have more than 25 tracks on the MOH Radio Live Top 100. But the “Retaliate” album was not the only incredibly successful album on the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011. What about 10 tracks from Mad Dog’s album “A Night of Madness”, released in March? Only two tracks did not make it to the MOH Radio Live Top 100, but were very close. This means that Mad Dog has also had an amazing year with so many people that are ecstatic about his tracks. And don’t forget about the tracks from Endymion’s album “Three” and The Viper’s “Nothing To Lose”, although I have to say that I was a bit surprised that his tracks did not end up higher in the MOH Radio Live Top 100. As some of you might know, that means I have to do something very stupid in the near future ( to be continued…) And then there’s the thing about Neophyte’s “Mainiak” album. Only God knows how the MOH Radio Live Top 100 would have looked like when the album did not have to be postponed because of the unlucky events that took place in November at the Maassilo, where Neophyte wanted to showcase his album. Because of the party’s cancellation, it was dropped five days before the poll closed. It’s clear that this had an effect on the way the scene has voted for their favorite tracks: since the tracks had not been released before the 19th of December, the crowd was not able to vote for them. But this does not mean that making an album is the only way to get a record voted into the MOH Radio Live Top 100: it’s still about the quality and the impact of your tracks.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Then, there are some special things about this year’s MOH Radio Live Top 100. Let me start out with Amnesys: the Traxtorm Records DJ/ producer is the only artist to have a Top 10 hit on every edition of the MOH Radio Live Top 100 since it started back in 2007. That’s unique: Angerfist and Evil Activities were ranked in the Top 10 for four years, but can’t match Amnesys’ achievement. Art of Fighters had the privilege to see all of their 2011-productions end up in the chart, The Outside Agency made it to the chart with their underground smash hit “Primitive” and there were a lot of very successful remixes in the chart such as State of Emergency’s “Riotstarter” remix for Angerfist, Re-Style’s interpretation of “Unrivalled” and Evil Activities’ rework of “Drunk With A Gun”. And what about the entrance of guys like I:Gor and Section Grabuge. For the first time in history, a Polish act entered the MOH Radio Live Top 100, which was also the first ranking for Nekrolog1k and Agnost1k Recordings, two labels that will definitely have a bigger impact on the scene in 2012 ( keep an eye on Lowroller). Section Grabuge’s “Policia” had already been played a lot of times by artists like Partyraiser back in 2010, and now they also made their debut on the chart with their track “Seek And Destroy”.

SAMPLES AND OWN VOCALS

It’s funny to see that Metallica had three representations in the chart by the way: Mad Dog and The Stunned Guys took “Nothing Else Matters” as inspiration, “Live It Or Lie It” is based on a sample from the track “Frantic” and “Seek And Destroy” features audio from a Metallica live-concert. But on the other hand, more and more artists seem to prefer vocals written by themselves. This development in the hardcore scene was also obvious to see in the Top 100. It’s not necessary anymore to sample a hiphop record or a movie to create a hit-record. Take Endymion’s album for instance: they chose to combine their forces with a wide range of vocalists, creating their own sound in hardcore. Mad Dog created the lyrics from “Hardcore Machine” with a text-to-speech machine and the vocals from Outblast & Korsakoff’s “Hymn of Syndicate” came from a very talented singer from a Dutch music academy. Producers are able to give a track a more unique identity with their own lyrics, instead of searching for the right sample to put into a track. Just take a look at the tracks in the chart: more and more MC’s are also part of the productions. Guys like Tha Watcher, Syco, Da Mouth of Madness, Jeff, Alee, Nolz and Dutch hiphop legend E-Life have their own unique sound that seem to fit various hardcore styles in the right way. In my opinion this is a good development, and I hope to see this one being continued in 2012.

DUBSTEP

Next to the development of using more and more unique lyrics, there’s the influence of dubstep and drum ‘n bass on the hardcore producers. Those who follow their favorite artists on social media, have experienced that they are absolutely ecstatic about artists like Skrillex, Nero and Noisia. This has clearly affected some artists’ productions, as proven by tracks such as “Nirvana of Noise”, “Smash”, “Change” and the uprising of the crossbreed artists in the ‘industrial’ area’s at big events. But there’s something about the dubstep sound: the crowd does not seem to love it as much as the artists do. How many times have you seen a dancefloor on the mainstage freeze instantly when a dubstep track had been played? Maybe the scene is just not ready for it in this stage, proven by the fact that “Smash” was ranked 45th, although it had been played hundreds of times by the DJ’s. Does this mean that it’s no good and we should stop using dubstep elements in hardcore? Hell no! Experimenting with other genres have led to the biggest achievements in hardcore and is the basis of our scene’s existence. Maybe the artists have been pushing it down the crowd’s throat too much and should bring the dubstep elements in a more balanced way. That is a lesson to be learned from 2011. But then, there’s that one phrase in The Viper & Endymion’s track “Change”: “Music needs change, in order to survive”. Several developments are taking place, so there is no doubt that hardcore will continue to get bigger and stronger in 2012.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Next to the quality of your tracks, you need to let the world know that your tracks are there. Some artists have used their social media in a very effective way ( Angerfist, Art of Fighters , Outblast, Mad Dog, Korsakoff and Evil Activities for instance) but some of the chart’s leading men did not pay that much attention to the chart on their Facebook and Twitter profiles. And yes, I truly believe that this had an effect on their positions on the Top 100. Social media are brilliant tools to mobilize your followers to spread a message, and they have been used many times during the MOH Radio Live Top 100 poll. But there’s still one essential thing: promoting worthless music has never worked out for anyone. If the people don’t like your music, they’ll never vote for it. The key feature of the music will always be its quality! And after all the promotional activities during the poll, there was the discussion during the broadcast on Tuesday December 27th. Tweets like “I am disappointed my tracks are that low in the chart” up to “Wow, thank you guys for your votes, dedication and support!” and everything in between, we’ve read them all. As a matter of fact, we think that #mohtop100 was used more than 1,000 times in just one day by listeners from The Netherlands to Australia and the USA to Russia. I would like to say that the MOH Radio Live-crew has been blown away by the SICK amount of tweets and likes on our social media. We are very grateful for your passion and the way you showed your appreciation for the show! It was amazing to see that so many people from all over the world were discussing the same topics, the music really connected you guys and that’s perhaps the best thing we had wished for when we started this chart five years ago.

THE DANCEFLOOR HAS REACHED ITS VERDICT

And then there’s another thing about the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011: the domination of the so-called mainstream hardcore compared to industrial, crossbreed, frenchcore and the other styles in hardcore. It is true that more than 90% of the chart was filled with the mainstream-alike producers, but that has an obvious reason, which has already been proven in other popularity charts for decades. In a lot of charts, assembled by the popular vote with many musical styles, it’s been stated that certain genres have fans that are eager to vote for their favorite tracks and artists and other genres don’t. For instance: it seems to be uncool to vote if you are into the darkest and rawest industrial, while fans of Angerfist do not hesitate to support their hero if there’s a poll. And maybe some artists in the rawer styles of hardcore think they are considered to be a sellout if they ask for their fans’ support? Too bad actually, because I do believe that a more versatile MOH Radio Live Top 100 would have done more justice to 2011. But on the other hand: just take a look at the parties. Which artists get the most hardcore freaks on the dancefloor? That’s right: the mainstream artists ( they don’t call it mainstream for nothing). When the people can choose from 1700+ tracks, you should not be surprised that they dominate a chart like this. It’s not the guys on internet boards that decide which tracks are the most popular: it is the dancefloor what’s the most important thing to keep an eye on. If the crowd is moving, it means that it works out. Easy as that!

PROPER REPRESENTATION OF 2011

And in the end, I truly believe that the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011 is a representation of the tracks that got the people moving in the clubs, indoor events and the festivals. Of course there are way more tracks than 100 that could have been in the chart, but this is the dancefloor’s vision on hardcore if you’d ask me. Everybody has seen that Angerfist’s music makes the people go crazy, Mad Dog’s album has been played thousands of times at the events, Art of Fighters had a big impact and all of the producers that ended up in the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011 had their share in spreading the hardcore virus even more over the world. They should all be hailed for their achievements and earned their well-deserved positions in the MOH Radio Live Top 100 2011. We won’t tell you the exact number of votes, but believe us: we have doubled the record from back in 2010. It made it the most representative MOH Radio Live Top 100 so far. And to answer another question: no, we are not corresponding about the tracks #101 - #200 or something like that. It is a top 100, and the MOH Radio Live crew thinks we should keep it that way. Let’s make 2012 an even better year for the hardcore scene!
